Do I need to prewash black out liner?

I am going to make curtains for my daughter's bedroom. I was given that really nice black out liner material that blocks the sunlight. Do I need to wash the liner first? I don't want to take any chances that I could have to later in the future. They shouldn't get dirty but you never know. Will it ruin the fabric if I did wash it? I don't want to wash the cotton fabric and then have the liner shrink and the other not causing my hard work to go to shambles if I did have to wash. I guess maybe I should just wash, but wanted to know first if that kind of fabric can be washed.
